Cybersecurity 2What is a firewall and how can it protect your business?

Advanced Firewall Solutions help protect your network infrastructure from cyberattacks. Cybercrime is now the third largest global economy behind the U.S. and China, with over 40% of all UK businesses reporting an attack or attempted attack in 2021. The statistics are scary, but there are ways to mitigate the risks to your organisation...

For example, a SonicWall firewall will inspect all incoming traffic into the network and help to stop attacks before they hit your internal devices.

Some of the services that an advanced firewall solution like SonicWall can provide include:

  • Helping to prevent unauthorised access to your network by blocking intrusion attempts
  • Monitoring of network traffic. The ability to see what applications are using your internet connection across the network
  • Powerful intrusion prevention protects against a wide range of network-based threats such as worms and other malicious code
  • Real-time gateway anti-virus engine that scans for viruses, worms and other internet threats in real-time
  • Dynamic spyware protection blocks the installation of malicious spyware and disrupts existing spyware communications
  • Blocking newly created attacks before they enter your network

SonicWall versus Ransomware:

Eliminate ransomware with advanced multi-layered security services, including endpoint security, next-gen firewall services, email security and secure mobile access. Eradicate known, new and updated ransomware variants, and roll back endpoints to their prior clean state.

SonicWall versus Malware:

SonicWall Capture ATP scans a broad range of file types to prevent zero-day attack and targeted malware.

SonicWall versus Phishing:

The SonicWall Cloud App Security was designed to defend against all forms of phishing attacks and overcome the weaknesses of earlier perimeter-based protection

How can SonicWall help?

These business-grade firewalls have a lot of handy in-built features and the way they work is quite different to other firewalls.

SonicWall have invested heavily in security and reporting. The TZ470 model for example, is capable of antivirus, anti-spyware and anti-spam with advanced content filtering being part of its additional security. It is therefore a well-rounded package, allowing organisations to monitor Internet traffic and access to websites.

Content filtering is used by organisations as part of their firewall protection. Content filtering is the use of a programme to screen and/or exclude access to web pages or emails deemed objectionable, restricted or forbidden. The SonicWall content filtering system compares websites against a massive database in the cloud containing millions of rated URLs, IP addresses and websites. It provides organisations with the tools to create and implement policies that allow or deny access to sites based on individual or group identity, or by time of day, for over 50 pre-defined categories.

A SonicWall also contains advanced application controls to allow network administrators to block machines not loaded with anti-virus software from accessing the internet – a useful feature for any business.

Why is SonicWall so unique?

As well as the advanced content filtering, all documents and incoming traffic must pass through four levels of threat detection before they are ‘approved’ to be accepted into your mailbox. The SonicWall scans all incoming traffic PDFs, Office docs, etc. – and looks at files that represent malicious activity.

One of the most unique features of the SonicWall is its patented RTDMI, or Real-time Deep Memory Inspection capability.

Essentially, advanced malware detection engines execute files, log the resulting activity, and then, after execution, look for and attempt to correlate malicious behaviour. The correlation and scoring of these activities and behaviours are prone to both false positives and negatives. They are also prone to cause delays, unsatisfactory end user experience and subsequent IT ticket requests.

RTDMI technology detects and blocks malware that does not exhibit any malicious behaviour or that hides its weaponry via encryption. SonicWall RTDMI will identify malicious code and ‘break’ the encryption in real-time meaning that your organisation is protected, and you can go about business as usual with no downtime!
